Swiss Hamburger Recipe: Ingredients
- 2T. bacon fat
- 4 hamburger patties
- 1/4c. diced green pepper
- 1/4c. diced onion
- 16 oz. canned tomatoes
How to Make Swiss Hamburger
- Melt bacon fat in skillet over medium-high heat.
- Season beef with salt and pepper, before adding to skillet.
- Brown both sides of patties (about five minutes per side).
- Remove meat to plate. Reduce heat to lowest. Add onions to pan, and gently brown to caramelize, 10-20 minutes. Add peppers the last five minutes.
- Pour tomatoes into pan. Heat long enough to scrape up the browned bits and blend them into your sauce.
- Return meat to pan and cook in low, covered, for half an hour.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, noodles, or pasta.

Swiss Hamburger Tips for Success
- For best results a heavy, use a well-made, stainless steel pan with a tightly fitting lid, such as this one, made in Italy (view here).
- Butter may be substituted for bacon fat.
- Onions and/or peppers may be increased, to taste.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, do the following – Add only half the can of tomatoes to the skillet. Use a fork to whisk 1T. flour into the remaining tomatoes. Then, whisk this mixture into the skillet. Heat until it the flour is fully incorporated and the mixture is beginning to thicken, before proceeding with the rest of the process.
